Description

George Bell & Sons, London, 1898 Hardcover 1st Edition. Large book bound in dark blue cloth with gilt and silver titles and decoration on front, gilt on spine. Gilt on top edges of pages. Includes sixty six high quality, tissue protected illustrations. One of a limitied run of 500 copies.
Alfred Whitman, writer on engravings was in 1885, appointed an attendant in the department of prints and drawings in the British Museum. For some years he served in his spare time as amanuensis to the translator Lady Charlotte Schreiber, and helped her to arrange and catalogue her collections of fans and playing cards.

Preface - 'The endeavor in the following pages is to place before the reader an account of the invention and early history of mezzotint engraving on the Continent, to follow its introduction into England, and to trace its progress and development as a British art. The period traversed is from about 1640 until about 1870; and only works of engravers still living have been excluded. Except for the few who write solely for personal gain, probably every author thinks he is producing a book that will supply a need, and the present writer is no exception; for until now no consecutive account of mezzotint engraving in the British Isles has been included within the four corners of a book. It is therefore hoped the present effort will, to some extent, fill a gap'
