This historically rare Crusaders jug originates from Northern Israel in the Tiberias region of the Holy Land. The Crusader potters produced these distinctive type of geometric wares using the light red / Pinkish Tiberias clay to provide ceramics for the knights Templars and knights Hospitallers which manned the Tiberias fortress on the shore of the sea of Galilee. Many of these geometric ware sherds are found amongst Crusader ceramic assemblage by archeologists in the region. In 1187 A.D. Saladin besieged the Tiberias fortress with the Crusader princess Eschiva of Bures still inside guarded by the knights Templars and knights Hospitallers which were stationed there. The fortress fell in 1137 when the knights surrendered the fortress to Saladin in return for safe passage back to Tripoli. Saladin subsequently destroyed the fortress, the ruins of which are still visible today. A very rare piece of knights Templars/Hospitallers history from the Crusades.
