Description
A beautifully carved and extremely attractive oak relief from the late 15th century, this Flemish piece shows St. George slaying the dragon, with the princess in the background and much of the original colour remaining.
- Relief contained within a good integral frame.
- Retains much of the original polychrome.
- Maiden's dress in white dress, white horse, red dragon, George's coat in blue, green waves in the background.
- Relief town buildings at the top, with painted blue sky and white clouds between.
An exceptional piece of early origin, this will look wonderful in a period interior and is a piece for the collector of early decorative reliefs.
In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. There are some characteristic traces on the reverse from long dead woodworm. There are minor losses, the most important being the lower leg of St. George, but this is relatively unobtrusive and it is otherwise a stunning piece.
