In 1491 A.D the first Portuguese missionaries arrived in the kingdom of kongo in an effort to spread Christianity. It was during the reign of Afonso 1509-1543 A.D Christianity was adopted as the state religion. The early missionaries brought with them Catholic crosses as models for the Kongolese to cast from. The Kongolese casters added elements of their own which significantly transformed the European Catholic cross by depicting Christ on the cross with African features. They also added two figures perched on the cross beam and also one beneath Christ, creating a fusion of the Portuguese Catholic church and the Kongo people's interpretation of the cross as perfectly illustrated in this Kongo Christian artefact. It was believed that these crosses had the ability to protect against witch craft, illness, drought and had properties that ensued fertility of the women and the land.
