17th Century Crucifixion Oil on Canvas Painting

An emotive 17th century Italian oil painting of the crucifixion, this is a great size and contains the well known imagery for the subject matter, with Christ on the cross at the centre. A wonderful historic picture which is over 300 years old, it will look good in a large room, perhaps in a religious context, or might work as a television or film prop. - Gesso wood frame with faded gilt. - Angels in cherubic form at the top right. - Roman soldiers to the left, one on a horse and one with the spear which pierces Christ's side. - The Virgin Mary in blue and St. John in red to the right. - Dark, atmospheric feeling. - Central top bracket allowing it to be hung on a screw or nail. In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. There are no open tears, although the view from the back suggests some repairs over time. The frame has only minor marks. Both the picture and the frame appear relatively dirty and will probably benefit from a conservation clean.
