A wonderful, rare item of 18th century furniture, this is a salt box chair which will have been used to store what was a valuable commodity at the time. Placed in a warm location to keep the salt dry, it may have been used as a fireside chair or at the head of a table near the fireplace. Today, it will make a charming storage box and with some reimagining it can work as a bedside or a lamp table.
- Heavy, stable and sturdy.
- Sliding panel in the seat, which pulls forward and can be removed to reveal the box opening.
- Slatted box sides.
- Simple, linear design.
In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. There are signs of historical woodworm in one of the back slats and in the base, although this has not affected structural integrity.
