Fabulous all original English Napoleon Hat striking mantle clock produced by ECWM, under the ‘Empire’ brand. Relatively few Napoleon Hat designed case clocks were produced under the Empire brand, so this is a scarce opportunity to own one. Empire was a 1924 Trading Name of ECWM, (the 'English Clock and Watch Manufacturers Ltd'), formed after the merger of H.W.Williamson Ltd of Coventry, and London based makers Grimshaw, Baxter and J.J Elliott Ltd in Oct 1921. The trade name came into being following the 1924 British Empire Exhibition. However, in 1932 ECWM was purchased by Smiths English Clocks Ltd of London, who continued to use the Empire name for a number of years. Therefore, this 1931 clock was built before that takeover, adding further to its scarceness and collectability. All component parts on the clock are certainly authentic and probably original, further adding to the clocks rarity and collectability and helping with the clocks dating. (ECWM heart-shaped winding keys, Empire circular pendulum bobs and gong blocks had unique and bespoke designs and finishes. Due to this, they frequently went missing from their host clocks and replaced with circular non-authentic variations). The clocks well-proportioned Mahogany case, is in-laid with geometric boxwood stringing and floral decoration, emanating from its central Oyster shell intarsia. Whilst running along the edges of the clock’s platform base are a row of hand-carved Oak ‘toothing’ and beading. The clocks quality can further be witnessed by the silvered solid brass chapter ring, which black painted Roman numerals and is laid onto a mat silvered brass centre piece. The dial is finished with a pair of original black Parallel Spade hands secured by a pinned collet and covered by convex glaze mounted in a thick brass bezel, standard for pre-1932 'Deluxe Category' Empire clocks. The clocks Mark 2, Empire 8-day pendulum driven striking movement is a fine piece of engineering, with the grain finished brass backplate showing both the famous Empire globe logo and the movement serial number (E 19349) which are stamped onto the plate. The clock strikes the hours and half-hours on its gong, with a deep and confident chime synonymous with Empire clocks. An high-end Napoleon Hat Empire clock, rarely seen on the market today!
