This large and fine shell tempered ware pottery bowl dates to the post Roman Barbarian period of the Dark Ages known as the migration period. This Germanic Frankish Empire ( 481-843 A.D ) bowl contains crushed shells giving extra strength to the vessel, popular with the Germanic tribes. There is incised decoration both on top of the shoulder and the top of the rim. The bowl originates from the Eastern Frankish region as the form displays both Germanic and Saxon influences. This is a very fine example of shell tempered ware pottery after the fall of the Roman Empire and into the Dark Ages.

This pottery bowl has age related wear. It has one chip under the rim and the incised decoration on top of the rim has worn with age. The vessel has no cracks and is in solid condition. See photographs for details.
