Description
I am pleased to offer this lovely antique Meiji period Japanese Satsuma moon flask depicting sparrows amongst bamboo and other foliage. Very delicately painted with fine and subtle detail - this is the nicest example of this type of vase that I've seen in a long time. The circular panels are surrounded by a mix of red geometric patterning and grey and green foliage on a beautiful custard yellow ground. The neck is densely painted with a green and brown geometric pattern and the base is decorated with red, green and gold foliage against a salmon pink ground. The vase is signed to the base Hamada along with the impressed mark for Taizan. This stunning vase was made by Hamada in collaboration with Taizan Yohei 9th (1856-1922), one of the renowned Kyoto Satsuma potters. He often based his work on drawings by Kono Bairei, famous for artworks of birds and flowers. The vase dates to the Meiji period before 1894, as the Taizan kiln closed around that year. The vase is in excellent undamaged condition with just a little gilt wear and measures 18.5cm tall by 15.5cm wide by 5.5cm deep. Free UK shipping International - please enquire
