Extremely impressive, Gentleman's original, Antique Swiss Winegartens Railway Regulator, 7 jewel lever movement (Cortebert cal 534) pocket watch with beautiful bold ivory porcelain dial and a very highly polished large silver nickel, hermetic railroad type case. C~1920's. Full working order and is a great timekeeper (within +2 / -2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked / serviced (using Moebius oils) and calibrated by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! DIAL:- Beautiful, very pale ivory (almost white), high gloss, impressive and distinctive porcelain dial in lovely condition - absolutely no marks or nibbles and just one tiny (micro) hairline between 10 - 11 which as so small is not showing up well in the photographs, does not detract in any way but mentioning for accuracy. Stamped clearly and boldly in black very fancy script; WINEGARTENS 145, Bishopsgate LONDON E.C.2. Signed clearly again in black script in an arc to base of dial; SWISS MADE. Very bold, black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black five minute markers and black diamond shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Large sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original big blued steel spade and whip railroad type hands and blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in good straight un-marked order. Original thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in amazingly clear and bright condition with few extremely light (micro again) overall tiny surface scratches (showing under eyeglass only) commensurate with age. CASE:- The chunky (5.6cm diameter/7.1cm from top of bow to base and 1.6cm depth) highly polished (please excuse any reflections in the pictures - was very difficult to photograph) silver nickel (favored by the Railwaymen for its durability and strength), railroad type hermetic case is heavy (has a pleasing, solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 118.5 grams) and in fabulous condition - absolutely no wear or indentations and just overall extremely light and short little micro surface scratches showing under eyeglass only (usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with loose coins and other heavy objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 90+ years service. All covers, both inner and outer still retain their original mirror finish. The front bezel (which has a lovely, crisp, totally un-worn milled coin edge) and back cover screw on and off correctly (hermetic), closing tightly and I have oiled the threads for years of continued smooth operation. The back cover carries (within an oval shaped cartouche) a large train/locomotive which is thundering down the tracks with smoke billowing and around this is written in clear, bold, crisp, un-rubbed script; * WINEGARTEN'S RAILWAY REGULATOR * The inside of the back cover is clearly numbered to centre; 2085522 5411. MOVEMENT:- The stem wound and set Swiss Cortebert, 7 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate, lever movement is in superb, bright, clean order and has just been checked and serviced. Carries the most wonderful geometric damaskeening to the top plates - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day it was made. Has a solid bi-arm balance wheel (did not want to stop for the camera - showing the balance spring is in perfect beat) with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), bright steel flat balance spring which is true and 'in the round', large raised yellow gold chaton settings, ruby end stone in a screwed in chaton setting, ruby pallet jewels, micro whip regulator (which as mentioned earlier is sat correctly in the central position and is typical of a Cortebert movement due to its unusual 'dog leg' configuration) and highly polished steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in slightly arched black script; CAL 534. Numbered to the bottom plate (under the dial); 3403869. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action. Runs like a train! Takes a very full and smooth wind - do not be afraid to fully wind, overwinding is the greatest horological myth! Runs for 36 hours on a full wind. Original large flat topped, totally un-worn, ribbed onion crown which operates correctly - the pull up/push down action is firm and true. Hand set again operates smoothly and correctly. Large original silver nickel horseshoe shaped bow which has a few light scratches/nicks from being suspended from a watch chain over the years. A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Swiss Railway type timepiece which has been much loved and very well taken care of - loves to do the job she was made for and will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations. I always have listed and in stock a selection of nickel pocket watch chains which will compliment this watch well - please contact me (Sarah Dunkley) if you have any specific requirements.
