On Rannoch Moor 1911
A stylish oil painting of a man crossing Rannoch Moor by the highly regarded landscape painter David Bates. Signed, dated 1911, inscribed verso, bears the remains of a Christie’s Auction stencil on the stretcher and presented in its original frame.
Bates was an "open-air" rural landscape artist, painting in the Midlands, Scotland, Wales, and abroad in Switzerland. His work shows the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader, Joseph Thors and Samuel Henry Baker. Bates is associated in style with the Birmingham School of artists.
Bates exhibited many works at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists, the New Watercolour Society in London, and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. His works are currently on display in Liverpool museum, Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum, and several other art galleries.
The auction record for a large example of his work stands at £36,000.
