Description
Delightful vintage striking mantel clock by Garrard’s, one of England's finest early 20th Century clock makers. (The clocks movement and related parts being made at the 'Garrrad Engineering and Manufacturing Co. Ltd' works in Swindon, Wiltshire, whilst final clock assembly was undertaken at 'Garrard Clocks Ltd', London).
From the outset in October 1931, Garrard’s newly appointed Board of Directors were determined to make the highest quality factory produced clocks they could. This, to help position themselves at the top of their market sector, against increasing competition from French, German, the USA, and other UK high-production clock manufacturers.
The clocks well-proportioned flame mahogany case (numbered 86014), offers the clock excellent architectural balance, sophisticated without being overpower. Applied directly onto the case is a “Garrard” and “Made in England”, signed skeleton chrome dial with quarterly Arabic numerals, finished with a pair of chrome Heavy Double Swell spade hands secured by a threaded collet. The dial is then protected by convex glaze mounted in a circular chrome bezel.
The clock has Garrard’s fabulous 14-day pendulum driven striking movement, (this one stamped with Serial Number S65515, helping to date the clock), striking the hours and half-hours on its original gong block and coiled gong. The Garrard distinctive lacquered and concentrically snailed movement plates are also stamped “Made in England” on the backplate, along with the famous Garrard brand logo and two 1931 Provisional Patent Application Date Numbers:
- The first application date number being "14475/1931", relating to Patent No. 378,897 and pendulum bob regulator nuts. (The application for this being made on 15 May 1931 and accepted on 5 Aug 1932).
- The second application date number being "16259/1931", relating to Patent No: 379,402 and a pendulum suspension escapement mechanism. (This application being made on 4 June 1931 and accepted on 1 Sept 1932).
The clock is also sold with a copy of Garrard’s original 'Instructions for setting Garrard Clocks in Beat’.
