An interesting portrait probably period 17th century,18th century at the latest, of a bearded Dutchman with a ruff and skull cap. The portrait could be a representation of Johannes Wtenbogaert (1557-1644) the Dutch cleric and leader of the Arminian party. It is painted on a quality oak panel and bears an old Christie's auction house stencil verso. The frame carries a label which reads “1606 12 guineas” Gilding has been applied to what is an old lap jointed frame, possibly covering up the original veneered finish of an early Dutch frame.
Fox Fine Art has clarified that the Early Dutch Portrait Oil Painting C.1630 (LA82480) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being c.1630
The painting has been recently cleaned. There is a small circular area at 6 o’clock with some residue possibly from a sticky label. The frame has been gilded.
