I came across this item at an antique fair and thought it fascinating. The label reports that it is an iron 'shaving from the edge of a cast iron skeleton or centre of a railway wheel before putting on the tyre'. It was produced by the firm of Ransomes & May in Ipswich and dated 1849. At the time Ransomes were a large builder of engines and a key supplier to the rapidly expanding railway network in the UK. I suspect this item was probably given at the time to a guest of the production plant who watched the wheels being shaved ready for fitting. Either way it was important enough to merit its own box and to preserve. An interesting snippet of early train history this is offered in original untouched condition. Dimensions of box: 13.5 x 7.5 x 7.5 cm
Historic Tech has clarified that the Early Railway Souvenir Iron Wheel Shaving c.1849 (LA356316) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1849
Being over 180 years old the iron shaving is now quite frail and corroded but still intact and wrapped in its original ribbon.
