This is a scarce opportunity to purchase a quality English striking Mantle Clock under the name of Anvil. Anvil was a trading name of The Perivale Clock Manufacturing Company, London, being introduced by the company from it inception in 1934. In those early days, the name Anvil was used exclusively to market and sell all Perivale assembled clocks, even having an a specific Anvil trademark stamped on the German made movements, which were imported into the London works. However, at the commencement of WWII, the importation of these German made movements ceased, leaving Perivale to design and produce their own quality mechanisms using the famous ‘Seated Britannia’ trademark of Perivale on their movement backplates. After the war, Perivale then introduced a range of other trade names that were used to market and sell their clocks, but the Anvil name was retained purely to sell their premium range of movements, with the name “Anvil” only being used on these clock dials. (Perivale’s Seated Britannia trademark was also stamped on movements, and this is one of those very clocks, being scarce to find today). The clock has a dark Oak ‘hour-glass’ case with robust graining and at the front of the clock, two decoratively hand-carved features have been added to present the clock as the sturdy, well-balanced quality timepiece that it is! The clocks chrome chapter ring lies directly on the case, with black Roman numerals. The clocks’ chrome Pyramid hands are secured by a threaded collet and surrounded and protected by a convex glazed cover mounted in a chrome bezel. The fabulous 8-day Perivale striking pendulum movement is a fine example of English clock mechanism engineering. It exhibits excellent design and workmanship and as mentioned above, is proudly stamped on the lacquered brass backplate with the famous Perivale trademark, (the seated Britannia holding a shield and spear – the version on this clock being used from 1949 onwards). The die-cast alloy lenticular pendulum bob is authentic (and probably original), as is the recessed finished cast metal gong block, all of which help to date the clock to the 1950’s. The clock strikes at the half and top of the hour with the number of hours on its gong and is sold with its authentic Perivale signed brass winding key. This is a great looking premium quality English clock, made by master craftsman!!
