Description
A superb quality French Egyptian Revival bronze gilt and porcelain mantel clock with finely cast acanthus leaf moulding, anthemion moulding and floral leaf detail adorned with two griffin. The case has porcelain tapering columns embellished with black and gilt decoration surmounted with porcelain and bronze gilt urn. The clock has a square porcelain dial with a delicately hand painted scene of female figure with cherub to the centre with Roman numerals to the chapter ring and a French eight day movement which strikes the hours and half hours on a bell. The dial is stamped with the makers name: AB (Achille Brocot) Louis Achille Brocot was born in 1817 to a renowned clockmaking family who then went on to become a clockmaker and mathematician winning many gold awards for his work. His most known discovery is the mathematical structure useful for approximating real numbers by rational numbers. He invented the Brocot suspension which allowed the length of the pendulum to be altered, adjusting the time by turning a key on the dial. He died in 1878. The clock movement has been cleaned and serviced and comes with a 12 month guarantee.
