The clock works and strikes using the two main springs striking hourly and half hourly on the coiled gong if you require the alarm function a separate smaller spring requires winding and the time setting once the desired time is reached the alarm will activate with a smaller separate hammer striking the gong at a rapid speed until the spring is wound down. This clock has been on my office desk now for over a week and it has great presence without looking out of place and with a gentle tone while striking it is in no way offensive.
