Description
Harold Knight (1874-1961) Huge Chairman Of Inland Revenue Oil Portrait Painting Brief Description: This is a very fine original Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting depicting the County Chairman Of The Inland Revenue ''Sir Edmund Nott-Bower'' K.C.B. Painted by the Royal Academy listed Newlyn artist 'Harold Knight' Ra, Roi, Rp (British 1874-1961). The extremely impressive and original work portrays Sir Not-Bower seated in his office Bergere armchair with his hand resting upon a 19th Century writing table and surrounded by documents and a silver Inkwell containing a Quill Pen. The original giltwood presentation Plaque attached to the lower edge of the frame reads: 'Presented to Sir Edmund Nott-Bower K.C.B, Chairman Of The Board Of Inland Revenue. By his Colleagues In The Inland Revenue On His Retirement From The Public Service'. Artist Biography: Harold Knight was a painter of sensitive portraits, especially of women and interiors. Born in Nottingham in the mid-1890s, Knight studied at the local School of Art and also studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. His teachers included Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. Knight married Laura Johnson – later to become Dame Laura Knight – the painter, in 1903, having known from his time in Nottingham and in Staithes, Yorkshire, where he painted on his return from France. With her, he studied the Dutch master painters in the Netherlands, and from 1908 they lived for a decade in Newlyn, in Cornwall, eventually settling in London. Knight was a steady exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1896 until 1937. He also showed in the Leicester Galleries and elsewhere. His reticent work and personality were overshadowed by Laura’s ebullient, more colourful nature and painting, but his pictures’ real qualities have been more appreciated in recent years. A superb investment piece - The artist's work has sold for tens of thousands of pounds at auction. Provenance: From a private collection.
