Huge Orientalist Oil Painting After Paja Jovanović – Sword Dance c.1960

A magnificent and exceptionally large vintage oil on canvas, dating to circa 1960, depicting a wonderfully theatrical Orientalist scene after the celebrated Serbian painter Paja Jovanović (Paul Joanovitch, 1859–1957). Titled “The Sword Dance,” the composition captures an animated traditional gathering within a rustic interior, centred upon a male dancer dramatically brandishing a curved sword above his head. Musicians and onlookers surround him, including beautifully observed figures in colourful traditional dress, creating a scene filled with movement, music and character. The artist has handled the composition with considerable confidence, particularly in the wonderfully rendered figures, flowing costumes and dramatic contrasts between the shadowy interior and the richly illuminated foreground. Warm ochres, deep reds, blues and earthy tones give the work a particularly attractive and atmospheric appearance. The painting follows the tradition and subject matter for which Paja Jovanović became internationally celebrated, portraying scenes of Balkan life, costume and ceremony with tremendous theatricality. It is signed “D. Pavlenski” lower right and is presented within an extraordinarily substantial and highly decorative moulded frame, finished in antiqued silver, bronze and muted rose tones. The frame incorporates elaborate scrolling foliage, shell and floral ornamentation and perfectly complements the scale and drama of the painting. At approximately 5 feet 8½ inches wide, this is a genuinely imposing work and would make a spectacular focal point within a large drawing room, dining room, entrance hall, hotel, restaurant or period interior.
