Japanese Art Deco 1920s – 1940s Egyptian-Style Cigarette Case, 24k Gold Inlay. An interesting Japanese Art Deco 1920s-1940s Egyptian-Style Cigarette Case, inlaid intricately in silver metal and 24 karat gold. Designed with a gentle curve originally for the hip-pocket. This piece is signed on back with K24 confirmed gold inlay. This is an example of the fascination that was prominent, during the art deco era, with Ancient Egypt and specifically with the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. The ‘looped cross’ symbol prominent on this piece is ‘The ankh’ - The ankh is a direct representation of the word for "life" in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. It is one of the most well-known symbols from Ancient Egypt. The ankh is sometimes referred to as the "key of life" or the "key of the Nile". It symbolizes eternal life and divine protection. It would make a perfect card case or to add to a collection of antique / vintage cigarette cases. In a good used condition, which shows signs of wear at the curved edges on the surface and the gilt surround. The push clasp is in good working order, as are the hinges and the internal orange elasticated band is also attached well and clean.
