Description
Size: Mount 64 x 50 cm, drawing inside mount window 51 x 38 cm (approx). Age: 1853 Condition: Very good condition on thick paper, mount new. Slight soiling to bottom half. This fine large drawing is in charcoal or soft graphite (pencil), and meticulous in the detail of the woodland subject. The drawing is inscribed in a lighter pencil "Holton, Nov 1853". Holton is a village in North East Suffolk, near Southwold. This suggests a Norwich School of Suffolk School artist. The style and subject matter point very strongly to the work of John Berney Ladbrooke. His paintings are almost invariably wooded landscapes, sometime with a cottage or other man-built feature but always with interesting trees, and usually with some small figures provided more for scale than central interest, often walking away for the viewing, often a woman and child. We also have a sketch in the same hand which is apparently a preparatory sketch for an oil painting known to have been attributed to Ladbrooke. Will be sent flat John Berney Ladbrooke (1803-1879) John Berney Ladbrooke, was born at Norwich on 31 October and baptised at St John Timberhill, Norwich on 6 November 1803, son of the English painter and printmaker Robert Ladbrooke (c.1768-11 October 1842) and his first wife Mary née Berney (1766-1807). Probably taught by his father and then apprenticed to John Crome (1768-1821), Ladbrooke became a significant member of the Norwich School of Artists, well known for his views of the English landscape. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1821-1822, and at the British Institution and the Suffolk Street Gallery until 1873, he also exhibited six works at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850. He is represented in Norwich Castle Museum, Norfolk, Bolton Museum, Lancashire and many others.
