I am quite frequently asked to provide boxes that have not been extensively restored be that because some prefer boxes that way or that they wish to customise it for their own purposes. Hopefully this box will appeal. Made during the very early Victorian period (or possibly slightly earlier) this box shows sign of use to the interior but is in quite remarkable condition to the exterior. It has been spared the usual restoration of the double inlaid strips to the front and top of the box insofar that the strips possess a dull grey patina rather than a bright silver like in lustre. The rosewood veneer is certainly of a high spec’ with highly attractive grain and deep rich colouring. The appearance of the box is enhanced by the recessed panels to the top and front with edge moulding set within an ebonised ‘frame’. Inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche and escutcheon with pewter strip surrounds. All veneer, edging and inlays are original and complete apart from perhaps the escutcheon and possibly one or two of the short pewter strips surrounding the escutcheon but that IS nit picking!! The lid closes perfectly square Original hinges and lock with a replacement working key supplied albeit a tad fiddly. The panel to the lid interior has been replaced as I daresay the side folds like many had been torn….now fully intact to provide the usual ‘love letter’ envelope. The base section features the original removable tray with what looks to be the original material to the 4 corner sections still fully intact. 2 are lids void of the knobs, 2 are padded for needles/pins. The central lid would have retained scissors and other sewing implements., the pull tab is still present as is the hooped sewn band to the centre. Please note that all of what appears to be the original pewter beading to the upper edges of the tray is still present and complete!! The tray still has the original side handles fully intact. The box is a bit of an oddity in some respects insofar that the paper lining in some sections certainly suggest usage as do the outer exterior edges of the tray yet the material and condition of the box exterior and presence of all dividers and edge beading would possibly suggest use to a lesser degree? Unpacked weight 2.3 Kg
