Description
This large silver capstan inkwell would be a statement piece on any desk. A lovely gift for the person that enjoys using an ink pen. Due to its size can also be used as a handy desk tidy, as the lip to the rim will securely retain small items, paperclips, drawing pins, marbles, etc. William Aitken was a Birmingham maker of; silver and silver-plated items during both the Victorian and Edwardian periods and active in Chester at the same time. His motto 'Nothing is too large; nothing is too small'. He was supposed to have said that: 'it is an impossibility to mention any article which can be made in silver, that is not in the stock of this maker. This inkwell certainly meets the 'nothing too large' challenge.

condition
The silver shows signs of a long life with several small dinks and surface scratching commensurate with age. However, this does not impact the overall aesthetic or practical use of the item. There is a plain shield applied on the outside which we presume covers an earlier monogram, but which could be engraved with the initials of a new owner. Sadly the original inkwell liner is is long gone, but an old school inkwell liner has be deployed by a subsequent owner. Similarly, the original fabric covering the base has also met its demise and been replaced by a more modern green baize fabric to protect polished surfaces. The base is weighted. Please do make time to review all of the pictures to gain a full appreciation of the item and its condition. Should you have any other questions in respect of either the item or its condition, please contact us and we will be pleased to assist wherever possible.
