Listing Title: Myles Birket Foster RWS (1825-1899) Exceptional Watercolour Portrait Painting Brief Description: An exhibition quality and condition original 19th Century Watercolour Portrait Painting depicting a Mother with her young child on the banks of a rural river landscape setting. Myles Birkett Foster RWS (1825-1899) Royal Academy Listed. Myles Birket Foster was an English genre artist, best known for his Victorian-era illustrations of rural scenes and children. Born on February 4, 1825, in North Shields, England, Foster was celebrated as one of the most popular watercolour artists of the era. His idealized, sepia-toned countryside prints and paintings were popularized and reproduced on the cover of books, magazines, and chocolate boxes. Developing a love for the arts through apprenticing under the engraver Ebenezer Landells, Foster quickly moved from commercial printing to the fine arts. An autodidactic watercolour painter, he travelled throughout Europe to immerse himself in varied environments, finally settling in Witley, England, where he produced the works which brought him widespread recognition. Before his death on March 27, 1899, in Weybridge, England, Foster exhibited over 400 paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The outstanding piece portrays the little girl cuddling her mother. On the floor beside them are two wooden food baskets, seemingly taken on the trip with them to pick & collect fresh produce. The attention to detail throughout the work is truly magnificent, and it is clear to see from the quality of this painting why Foster exhibited at the Royal Academy and why his works have sold for over £20.000 at auction!
