Myles Birket Foster Watercolour - The Stack Yard

Myles Birket Foster (RWS 1825-1899) was a painter, chiefly in watercolour,of landscape and rustic scenes in Surrey and elsewhere, peopled with children and milk maids; illustrator and engraver. Born in North Shields; came to London when he was five. Began as as a wood engraver under P.Landells when he was sixteen. Taught himself to paint in the 1850s and became a highly accomplished watercolourist. Travelled all over Europe and was admired by many leading artists of his day. Elected A of OWS in 1869. RWS 1862; and from that date contributed some 400 drawings to its exhibitions. Also exhibited at the RA from 1859-1881. Martin Hardie noted ‘As a painter, he worked with meticulous finish and outstanding technical skill’. ‘The Stack Yard’ initialled watercolour.
