Frank was one of the most distinctive abstract painters working in Britain during the last 60 years and his paintings are instantly recognisable. He was born in Bridlington and after a period at the Hull school of art, attended the Slade school from 1959-1961. His teachers included Claude Rogers and Ceri Richards who between them gave him the technical ability to construct beautiful abstracted works of art. In 1961 Frank was awarded the Boise Travelling Scholarship which took him to Stockholm where the influence of movements such as the Cobra group had a great influence of his development as an abstract painter. On his return he started exhibiting at the Young Contemporaries, Gimple Fils, the London Group, Tooth’s, Grabowski Gallery and that centre for aspiring young artist’s, the Drian Gallery. During this period Frank visited St Ives in Cornwall where he was fascinated by the white light, the coastal landscape and the blue of the sea and this subject has become a recurrent theme for him over the years. Never one to stand still artistically, his paintings have moved seamlessly from his Spot paintings, themes on the island of Santorini to painting on newspaper, the later giving added texture and a diverse substrate of colours. Provenance; Purchased directly from Frank in 2000.
