Alan Stenhouse Gourley, ROI (1909-1991) was a well-known painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes and figure subjects. He was born at Ayr and studied art in Glasgow 1928 and in Edinburgh 1929-31. Thereafter he settled in South Africa and taught at Johannesburg Technical College 1932-37. Gourley returned to Europe and continued his art studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris 1938-40 and later at the Slade School in London in 1945 after a period of war service. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1955-82, at the New English Art Club 1977-80, and mainly with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters of which society he was elected a member 1964 and later its President. In addition to his landscapes in Britain he also painted views in Spain, Morocco, Malta, Italy, Singapore and South Africa where he lived in the 1930s. His work is represented by a number of examples in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and in the personal collection of HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Gourley lived for many years at Bromley in Kent. Provenance; This painting was purchased from the artists nephew who inherited this work and a number of others from the estate of the deceased.
