High quality expressionist drawing. Tony Bartl exhibited annually at the Lincoln Society of artists where his figure paintings were always the highlight of the show. Antonin Karel Bartl or Tony Bartl was a Czech artist who graduated from the Prague Academy of Fine Arts where he was taught by Oskar Kokoschka and was influenced by German Expressionist and Austrian Secession painters such as Otto Dix, Gustav Klimt, Paula Modersohn-Becker and Otto Muller. Bartl came to Britain in 1947 and a year later joined the staff of Lincoln College of Art. His artwork and mosaics were widely used to decorate a number of public buildings and on these projects he worked closely with the Lincoln architect Sam Score. Bartl exhibited in Liverpool at the John Moores Awards and at the Bridlesmith Gate Gallery, Nottingham. Also in Leicester, Birmingham, Lincoln, London, with solo shows in Cambridge, Nottingham and Lincoln. Provenance; The artist's wife Sheila Bartl.
21st Century Gallery has clarified that the Original Expressionist Pencil Drawing 'Double Sided' of a Woman Washing by Tony Bartl 1910-2002. Signed & Dated 48 (LA363889) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1948
The drawing is in reasonable condition with a repaired 3 cm tear on the left hand edge and a mark left from previous framing which can to the most part be covered by mounting. There are also some areas of creasing that show on the images above.
