Description
Fine quality and important mixed media painting by Egon Adler and one of the few examples of his pre war paintings still in existence. The location of this work is not known. He was still living and working in Germany at the time and coupled with is strong expressionist feel we must assume it was a scene close to where he was living. Egon Adler was a Czech painter and draftsman. He was born in 1892 in Karlovy Vary in Czech Bohemia (Karlsbad in German). He studied in Berlin, Munich and Weimar, and had close ties with the German avant-garde. His eye was inspired by German expressionist painters such as Franz Marc, August Macke and Alexej Von Jawlensky; he also worked with Oskar Kokoschka. In 1913 he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in Berlin and at the ninth exhibition at the Der Sturm gallery. In 1920 Egon Adler exhibited at the Rudolfinium in Prague and at the third Tvrdosijne exhibition in Stuttgart. According to the biographical notes of the artist's wife, in 1922 Egon Adler, his wife and their daughter moved from Karlovy Vary to Berlin where Egon Adler worked at the Bauhaus. Shortly afterwards, he decided to return to Karlovy Vary, a spa town where the quality of life would be better. They rented an apartment from a friend on Park Street. Egon Adler lived in Berlin and visited his family by car every two months. It was at this time, in 1922, that he took this view of Karlovy Vary. The relief of the city, its red roofs and colored facades are synthesized by a cubist and expressionist approach of the forms. In 1938 he moved to Paris and created illustrations for 20th Century Fox. When Germany invaded Paris, the couple managed to get their daughter across to the United States. With the help of Varian Fry, Egon Adler and his wife Berthe went through several stages, Marseille, the Pyrenees, Spain and Portugal before boarding separate liners for the United States. The Adler family settled in New York, where the artist participated in the development of abstract expressionism in the 1950s. An exhibition was held in 1964 at the Goethe House in New York. Provenance; This painting and one other were given to Antonin (Tony) Bartl, another Czechoslovakian artist who came to Britain in the 1950's. I purchased the works from the family. Please note. The last photo shows a small repaired area of damage (centre of photo) 1 cm x .5 cm. This is not noticeable unless you know it is there. The work has a little cockling top and bottom from the paper being stretched and watercolour applied. Again, this does not detract from the work.
