This oil painting was produced in the 1950's when Richard was working for the Rank Organisation painting the 'Rank Starlets' This work was probably a working portrait for a studio prop during filming of an historical drama. It is not a period portrait. Richard Walker was born in 1928 and by the age 13 he had won the Royal Drawing Society’s Founders Medal. In 1945 he had a painting accepted and hung in the Royal Academy and he had won a scholarship to Canford School of Art. After a spell at Oxford and service with the RAF, he trained at Croydon and became a student teacher there before going to the Slade School of Art. He has been a professional artist since art school, specializing in Portraiture and landscape painting, Portraits by Richard hang in the Royal College of Music, Reading Art Gallery and the Civic Hall at Guilford to name but a few. His portrait of the war hero Douglas Bader is in the possession of the family.
21st Century Gallery has clarified that the Original oil on canvas '17th C. gentleman' by Richard Walker 1928-2009. Unstretched canvas c.1955 (LA322759) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Mid 1950's
The painting is in reasonable condition. Any small creases will be eradicated by stretching.
