Alistair Michie was educated in France and Scotland and studied architecture in Edinburgh. During World War 11 he was a pilot in the R.A.F flying Mosquito's on reconnaissance missions over Germany . In the 1960's after a successful period as a graphic artist he began a career in painting and sculpture. In 1962 he went with his mother, Anne Redpath, the Scottish Colourist, to the Venice Biennale where he first saw the works of Mark Rothko and Antoni Tapies. From that moment on he became an Abstract artist using colour and form to describe his work. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions in the UK and abroad. In 1964 he was the finalist in the Arts Council Open Painting Competition. He has shown at the Richard Demarco Gallery in Edinburgh in 1971 and travelled to Brazil in 1972 to lecture and participate in exhibitions. He had an exhibition of his sculpture at the Barbican in 1981 and the following year in Cardiff and Covent Garden, London. In 1982 he became an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. He showed regularly at the RWA and in 1992 and 1993 was invited to exhibit at the Alresford Gallery. He was Hunting Observer Finalist in both 1993 and 1994 and in 1993 showed at the Bruton Street Gallery in London. In 1996 he had a solo exhibition at the Mall Gallery, London and in 2000 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Bournemouth University. His work is included in several prominent collections such as British Aerospace, Oxford University, the Museums of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, B.P. International, Mitsui Bank and the Mazda Motor Company. Provenance; Purchased from the artist by me in 2007 I first met Alistair in 2003 at his studio in Wareham in Dorset. He showed me around his studio and I bought a number of oil paintings from him. I found him quite reserved at first, but over the next few years he opened up and talked more freely about his life and art. Up until 1962 he had worked for Artistpartners as an illustrator of such publications as Vogue.
