Painter, draughtsman, mural artist, printmaker and teacher, and latterly sculptor. Born in Staffordshire, studied at Southport and Liverpool schools of art , and latterly at the Royal College of Art, where his teachers included Tom Monnington and Randolph Schwabe. Between 1928-1937, he assisted Alfred Kingsley Lawrence, another of his tutors at the Royal College, to complete the Bank of England Murals. Working as a painter, mural artist, print maker and later sculptor, Sutton exhibited at the Royal Academy and in the provenances.
21st Century Gallery has clarified that the Original Pen & Ink Drawing 'The Strongman from the Travelling Circus' by Hector Macdonald Sutton 1903-1995. Monogrammed c.1935 (LA340309) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1930's
The painting is in good condition. There is some paper scuffing above the right shoe, but this does not detract from the work.
