R. J. Lloyd was born in Hereford in 1926 and lives in Devon. He began painting around 1950 and received early encouragement from the sculptor, Henry Moore, who was a good friend. Later in life he became friendly with the poet, Ted Hughes, which resulted in Reg illustrating four of Hughes' books of poems, including the award winning What is the Truth? Reg Lloyd’s work is included in the collections of the V&A Museum, National Maritime Museum and Tate Gallery in London as well as Oriel and Exeter Colleges Oxford, the British Embassy in Paris, Teignbridge Council and the Bruton Art Gallery, Bideford. Lloyd’s exhibitions include Portrait of the Artist at the Tate Gallery, annual showing with the Royal Institute at the Mall Galleries, a major retrospective at the Hereford City Art gallery in 1996 and an exhibition at Dfn Gallery, Broadway New York in 2000. This work was certainly influenced by his association with Henry Moore and the sculptural nature of the painting with iron work and barbed wire. I estimate that stylistically it dates to the mid to late 1950's. Provenance; The artist's studio.
