During the Second World War Ernest Greenwood served in the Royal Artillery and then the Army Educational Corps, working at the close of the war in the Rehabilitation School in Berlin, where this watercolour was painted. He also made a number of works referencing the Holocaust including a four-part series which are now in the Ben Uri Museum and Gallery in London. While there, as a trained artist, he was always looking for models willing to pose. He recalled to me some 50 years after the event how a packet of cigarettes would buy a model for the day. Born in Welling, Kent. Trained at the Royal College of Art under William Rothenstein and Gilbert Spencer, also at the British School in Rome. He then spent a further year at the Royal College studying etching techniques under Malcolm Osborne. In 1939 he married a fellow artist, Eileen Messenger. He was inspector of art education for the L.C.C. from 1953 to 1966, also examiner for the Royal Society of Arts. He was a Past President of the Royal Society of Painters in watercolour, chairman of the Kent guild of artists and a member of the arts committee of the University of Canterbury. He was a guest lecturer for many years with Swan Hellenic cruises. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, New English Art Club, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, also numerous exhibitions in the provinces, including Brighton, Lavenham, Birmingham, and Chester, also in the U.S.A. His work is in public collections include the Tate Gallery, Brighton, Hastings and Hull. Works in private collections include public bodies, major industrialists, private firms and collectors in the U.K. and Canada, U.S.A., Holland, Japan and Austria. An historically fascinating and important record of peoples lives in the devastation of post war Berlin.
