During the pandemic post-lockdown period, we have been busy in the workshops renovating, servicing and cleaning some of our considerable stock of quality vintage timepieces. As such, we bring to market, this fabulous English striking Mantle Clock produced by the Enfield Clock Company (London) Ltd, one we believe would have been amongst the last few to leave the Enfield works. (In 1933 Enfield was purchased by the much larger Smiths English Clocks Ltd and immediately became known as “Smiths-Enfield”, although up until early 1950, Enfield continued to manufacture striking mantle clocks using their own F3 movements, from their factory in Enfield, London). As indicated then, this clock has the robust and quality Enfield 8-day F3 mechanical pendulum movement, (introduced by Enfield in c1945, and subsequently used by Smiths for many years afterwards, due to its beautifully engineered and exceptional reliability). However, the movement was further upgraded by Smiths in 1950, to the F3A, thus supporting our professional believe that this clock must have been amongst the last to leave the Enfield works with their F3 mechanism, with its brass line-dotted backplate still being signed “Enfield. Made in England.” The clock strikes the hours and half-hours and comes with its original Smiths-Enfield 115g P7 pendulum bob (which again was replaced in 1950), and its original Smiths pear-shaped cast-iron gong block with coiled gong. The clock has a simple and wonderfully understated 'box' designed dark Oak case, that is well-grained and patinaed with age. This in turn, truly helps to personify the minimalistic but highly effective chapter ring dial, set directly onto the dark case. The bold, cream coloured Arabic numerals have been creatively machine etched out of one piece of circular steel, giving rise to a stunning effect for anyone who observes the clock front-on. The dial is signed “Smiths Enfield” and is finished with a pair of Skeleton style chrome painted hands secured by a pinned collect. The dial is then protected by a clean convex glazed front supported by a chrome bezel. As vintage clocks go, this is not the most expensive or overly indulgent in terms of case design. However, what it may lack in these areas, it certainly gains in others…It is a hugely impressive quality timepiece, that keeps fantastically accurate time and is massively pleasing on the eye for its unique simplicity. So in summary, an excellent all-around investment for the many that DO ‘simple yet impressive’!
