Portrait of Andre Chénier (1762-1794) Early Romantic Poet A late 18th or early 19th century portrait of a gentleman, inscribed in pencil on the stretcher, Andre Chenier. The inscription has probably been transcribed from its original stretcher by a restorer. In my opinion his clothes would suggest a date of around 1825, making it after his death. This would coincide with the first publishing of Chénier’s work. André Marie Chénier (30 October 1762 – 25 July 1794) was a French poet who became embroiled in the events of the French Revolution. His sensual, emotive poetry marks him as one of the precursors of the Romantic Movement. His career was brought to an abrupt end when he was accused of "crimes against the state", by no less a figure than Robespierre. An appointment with Madame Guillotine followed. His life was celebrated by Umberto Giordanos’s opera Andre Chénier, the life of a poet hero. Condition The canvas has been lined, stretcher replaced and the painting cleaned in recent times. Size 54cm x 44cm (62cm x 52cm framed) 21 x 17 inches (24.5 x 20.5 inches framed)
