Description
Very Rare, Pre-SylvaC (Shaw and Copestake) Large 11" Scottish Terrier (Scottie) Dog 1932. Peppermint Green Colour (Model No. 1209, Registered Number 778504). Sometimes nicknamed 'The Mac Dog'. This lovely chap is 11 inches high, the largest that 'SylvaC' made, and is a registered piece from the 'Pre-War' Era - Shaw and Copestake era - 1932, prior to SylvaC registration. Model Number 1209. Registered Number 778504. He is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or inherited marks since manufacture. He's been well looked after and is looking for a new home. We have fallen in love with him and would love to keep him, but.. that goes for most of our pieces! He has both his model number and registered number, but no Maker's mark which is due to him being from 1932 and earlier than the 'SylvaC' name was introduced in 1937/1938. Some information related to this is below: Early SylvaC wares were often unmarked or marked with a "daisy" mark before the trade name "SylvaC" was introduced around 1937 and registered by Shaw & Copestake in 1938. The "SylvaC" mark was not consistently used until the 1940s. Shaw & Copestake also used paper or metal foil stickers to mark their ware, and these were also used as a printed mark. While the metal foil tags were introduced, they were not always successful and many fell off during use. Earthenware manufacturer at the Drury Works (later called the Sylvan Works), Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England. The business was founded as the Shaw & Copestake pottery company in 1894, at the Drury Works, Normacot Road, by William Shaw and his uncle William Copestake. William Copestake retired after four years and Mr. Richard Hull (the father of Richard Hull of the Falcon Pottery, who had then recently returned from a sojourn in Canada) became William Shaw's partner in the business. Richard Hull's son (Richard Hull Jr) joined the business in 1924 and succeeded to his father's place as a partner in the Sylvan works when the latter died in 1935. In 1936 the business became incorporated as a Limited company and William Shaw became its Managing Director with Richard Hall (Jr) as joint managing Director. For six years it was under William Shaw's direction before he retired, whereupon he was succeeded by Richard Hull and was joined on the Board by Eric J. Dennis of the Falcon. In 1938 the directors of Shaw & Copestake acquired the company 'Thomas Lawrance' and the name was changed to 'Thomas Lawrance (Longton) Limited' of the Falcon Pottery, Longton.
