Description
Please see my stock page for one of the largest selection of jewellery boxes available on this website.
Fine quality mid 1800’s gents jewellery box in superb condition. Attractive grain to all aspects with even colour….void of any light bleaching. Fully brass bound to all exterior edges to provide maximum strength to the box carcass and protect the vulnerable edges. Subtle inlaid brass strips slightly in from the edges of the top and front of the box complemented by the ‘frames’ to the cartouche and escutcheon. All veneer and all brassware is original, complete and in excellent condition with a replacement working key supplied. The lid closes perfectly square and opens to reveal an impressive interior. Lined throughout with leather with velvet panel to the lid and bases of the removable tray and the storage section beneath. The velvet has I believe been replaced and an extremely nice job done. No tears or wear to the leather or velvet and all dividers fully intact. The original tray has the original side metal hoop handles to ease removing the tray. Original leather to the base in excellent condition. Originally this box would have contained various toiletry accessories that a gentleman would take on his travels. As with most boxes of the style the containers have long gone and as a consequence the box lends itself perfectly for modern day use as a jewellery box. Nowadays many gents have a few wristwatches, sets of cufflinks etc and the various dimensions of the sections within the tray and beneath the tray makes this item ideal for the purpose. The jewellery shown in the photograph is not included in the sale. Some research has been done re’ the name on the cartouche and it is possible that the box belonged to Allan Carswell Gow , a very successful ship owner/shipping agent based in Glasgow. The information re’ the company and birth/death dates of the gentleman will be included with the box.
Compare the quality and appearance of this item to modern produced gents jewellery boxes….you will be hard pushed to find better. Highly Recommended.
