Description
This is a Extremely Rare 18th Century Solid Silver Sugar Caster/Sifter, and was crafted by the Silversmith Robert Hennell l and was made in London in 1785 making it 235 years old, this is a Lovely Georgian Solid Silver Sugar Caster/Sifter and is Beautifully designed with its Bulbous Shape towards the Base and rest on a Round Stand, and it has a Beaded Pattern all around on the Bulbous and Base. towards the top it has a Dome Shape and the Lid Pulls of and fits securely, the very top has a Fine Finial and the many Holes for the Sugar has a lovely Criss Cross Pattern, it is fully Hallmarked to the base for London 1785 and Robert hennell l, on the side of the Sugar Caster/Sifter there is a Griffin Crest During the Georgian era, the neck of the sugar caster was becoming longer and their bodies became more bulbous. This gave the impression of a more elegant piece. This elongated shape became known as vase shaped, and this is the shape that sugar casters were predominantly created in during this time. Throughout the second half of the eighteenth century there were pieces being created with finials in the form of acorns, flames and even pineapple, however towards the end of the century a simple ball shape had been introduced and this became the most commonly used shape, undoubtedly due to the ease of creating this compared to the more novelty finials. This would have been owned by a Wealthy Family in the 18th Century when times were very different to today, there are very light dings all around the Sugar Caster, but are not very noticeable, the Finial is Leaning and on the inside of the Lid is an old repair that is not noticeable on the outside of the Sugar Caster, this doesnt detract from the beauty of this 18th Century Antique and is only mentioned for accuracy, and this would add something special to any collection.
