A rare Chinese Export Paktong* table spoon, fiddle and thread pattern with shoulders, although the top curves backward more like Old English pattern. With pseudo marks consisting a maker’s mark AGG a trefoil shape stamp and an oval stamp with what look to be trees, plus a G and a 2 in square punches. Contemporary monogram ‘M.L’ in cursive script. *Paktong or ‘white copper’ is a rare alloy of zinc, copper and nickel of Chinese origin, closely resembling silver. Paktong was imported in small quantities during the 18th century and used by European craftsmen to make domestic pieces in imitation of silverware. The vital silver-coloured ingredient, nickel, was not identified in the west until the second half of the 18th century.
