Description
A rare John Pennington porcelain pickle dish formed as a leaf with stalk looped handle, c.1780. Standing on 3 conical feet, the shaped dish has moulded veins and coils around the edge, painted in underglaze blue around the edge and with a central oriental scene of a house with fenced garden and some cannonball style rocks in the water in front. This pattern can also be seen on the reverse of some John Pennington sauceboats decorated with the Large Exotic Bird pattern. Reference: Liverpool Porcelain Of The Eighteenth Century by Watney, colour plate 31d for a similar example.
