Description
This is an exquisite English bracket clock of very small size by John Johnson who was working from Grays Inn Passage , London from 1770 to 1800 . The company was taken over by his apprentice John Dwerrihouse and later became Dwerrihouse and Carter who were very successful makers during their time in business. Interestingly the initials DW are scratched behind the chapter ring. This clock is very small indeed and I presume that it was a special commission for a wealthy client. The clock is only 14 inches tall (handle down)and 8 1/2 inches wide to the edge of the feet and 6 inches deep.It has a 5 inch arch brass dial (the normal size for this type of clock is 8 inches ) which has strike silent facility. Clocks of this size are very rare indeed and eagerly sought after by collectors but they rarely appear on the open market As can be seen from the photographs the clock is of typical form with an inverted bell top with carrying handle but the discerning buyer will immediately notice the extra touches that are only found on the finest clocks of the period such as the brass mouldings used on the front and rear doors and the edge the side frets . There is brass strip around the case and between the sections of the bell top.The side frets are original and are made from cut brass. The original finials and handle are beautifully cast and decorated.Unusually the gilding retains the vast majority of the original finish which has not been polished back to brass. The Ormlou mounds are of an unusual design are used front and rear of the canted corners on the case. The top is similarly canted. The substantial double fusee movement of 8 day duration has reinstated verge escapement and strikes the hours on a bell. The back plate is elaborately engraved and signed by the maker. It is of the finest quality as produced in London at the time and is in full working condition . This clock is genuine and original .I offer a money back guarantee to this end. I have deliberately left the clock in its original finish and it has simply been waxed.Personally I love the condition exactly as it is and would not change it in any way. Like all antiques there are the odd age related marks as can be expected on any item of this age but I am certain that the most discerning client will not be disappointed. Any potential clients are encouraged to view the clock prior to purchase in order to appreciate how small this clock actually is. I have attached a size comparison photograph next to a typical lancet shaped bracket clock. This clock is much nicer in the flesh and looks superb . I am certain that the buyer will be delighted with their purchase. If the buy it now price is paid in full then I will deliver and set up the clock free of charge to the English mainland,Wales and the Scottish lowlands.I will also provide a 12 months guarantee under these circumstances. This is the same service that is provided by a high street retailer without the customer having to pay for the overheads If a lesser off is accepted then this will be sold as a trade sale with the clock as described and with shipping costs the responsibility of the buyer. I will ship this clock worldwide . UK buyers are asked to use alternative means of payment to Pay Pal if at all possible.
