Description
Here is the opportunity to purchase a stunning rosewood mantle clock signed by the infamous Bennett.
Sir John Bennett was The eldest son of John Bennett, watchmaker, of Greenwich, he was educated at Colfe's Grammar School, Lewisham. In 1846 he established his own business as a watchmaker at 65 Cheapside, in the City of London.
Although trained as a practical watchmaker, Bennett's business at Cheapside was a high street retailer of clocks and watches made by English and Swiss clock and watch manufacturers of high quality.
He retired from business and from the Court of Common Council in 1889, first to Rotherfield, Sussex, and later to St. Leonards-on-Sea on the Sussex coast, where he died in 1897 at the age of 82. He was described in an obituary as "a man of strong character, very eccentric, and one of the most familiar figures in London"
This clock represents the type of quality clocks retailed by Bennett, the 8 day twin fusee movement striking on a bell is in perfect working order having been fully cleaned and serviced. the dial is in fantastic condition and overall would compliment any sideboard or mantle piece. Although the case is somewhat plain and simple the carving and the brass edged panel to the front of the case looks fantastic with the beautiful grain of the rosewood. the beveled glass front door allows access to the dial for winding the clock and adjusting the time with the rear of the case having a glazed door allowing viewing of the movement and amplification of the striking bell.
I would describe the overall condition as excellent and ready to be displayed.Like all antiques there is the odd minor mark but the condition with delight the most discerning buyer.
