Description
A German made Westminster chiming Mantle Clock, driven by a jewelled platform escapement mechanism, a scarce feature on chiming clocks. From our experience and for information purposes only (this is not guaranteed), we believe that the clocks movement and design and the general ergonomics and finish of the clocks styling lends itself strongly and distinctively to the 'Karl Lauffer' works, a well-respected German clockmaker who oversaw the making of clocks under his own name from 1919 until his death in 1954. The Mahogany case with clean simple lines, has excellent aged patina, with a thin strip of central Mahogany embellishment to the front base. The mat silvered chapter ring is laid directly onto the case with black Roman numerals and a pair of brass Skeleton style hands secured by a threaded collet. These is protected by convex glaze mounted in a brass bezel. As mentioned, the cock’s scarce movement arrangement is driven by a platform escapement mechanism, with unusually 8 x rear-hung chiming hammers that service the chiming rods every 1/4 hour to sound out its wonderfully pitched Westminster melody. The clock also has its chime / silent lever located on the movement. In compliance with the 1936 British Govt. stated changes to imported foreign goods and their labelling, the clocks mill finished brass backplate has no makers name, but does have its movement serial numbered, 91561. This lovely clock with its complex movement has obviously been designed, built and assembled by experienced engineers to a high standard.
