Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Alexander Roy Gibson (1880-1968): 'Loudon's Corner / The street corner in winter, King St Lane, Kilsyth, North Lanarkshire' Floreat / flourish (Fl. 1912-1957). Exhibited at Royal Scottish Academy; Rws/ Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; Liverpool; Aberdeen Artists’ Society Refernced at https://www.kirkcudbrightgalleries.org.uk/artists-footsteps/artist/alexander-roy-gibson/ This hand-coloured wood block print from the 1920s is taken by Gibson from his oil painting on canvas of the same scene. This is on display in the Colzium Museum, North Lanarkshire. https://www.culturenlmuseums.co.uk/SIModes/Detail/15094. Gibson depicts many scenes of street/town life and social conditions of the time, works with a winter setting are also popular in Lanarkshire, Fife and Dumfries & Galloway. The last two images show the oil painting this work is based on and another concurrent street scene. Stirlingshire painter, born in Kilsyth, the son of a Kilsyth master grocer. He described himself as painter at his marriage in 1910. and was by then also an amateur artist. He turned to painting professionally after being injured in World War I. He mainly painted watercolours of topographical and rural scenes, especially around Kilsyth and in Fife and Ayrshire. He used his brother James’ photographic studio for his sales. A regular visitor to Galloway, he stayed with his relatives, the Charteris family on many summer visits to Castle Douglas and was also a regular visitor to Kirkcudbright. The period artwork is in a new frame the style concurrent with the aesthetic of he era, behind glass, with hanging cord and fixings. A lovely period item with Scottish local relevance and a great charm to the colour and composition.
