Sokoto Terracotta Standing Figure - circa 750 BC
A very old, fine and rare terracotta standing figure. This is a precisely and wonderfully sculptured figure. It has incredible presence , invites contact. The male figure is mounted on a bespoke base. The color of the figure is a light reddish pink. The two arms with hands are placed on the chest. The head is elongated with a high forehead; the head has a cropped hair style. The facial features: overhanging eyelids with tribal scarification marks also seen below the eyes; the eyes are recessed and appear open; the ears are evident. The nose is long and slender and the mouth is protruding and partially open. There is a long pointed beard. The neck is elongated and has a wide collar around it The figure is terra cotta (clay) and the sculpture is of the African Sokoto culture of Nigeria. Sokoto sculptures incorporate red mills which give the clay a pinkish color; the graininess on the figure is due to the limestone and sand used in the clay. 57cm height by 26cm width by 15cm deep. 12Kg in Weight mounted on bespoke stand. Acquired from a Belgian dealer.

Good condition, lower part of the statue (lower abdomen) show an old breakage/loss. The remaining figure is in exceptional condition.
