The Yoruba religion comprises the traditional religious and spiritual concepts and practice of the Yoruba people. Its homeland is in present-day Southwestern Nigeria which comprised Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti as well as Lagos States and the adjoining parts of Benin and Togo, commonly known as Yorubaland. It shares some parallels with the Vodun practiced by the neighbouring Fon and Ewe peoples to the west and to the religion of the Edo people to the east. Yoruba religion is the basis for several religions in the New World, notably Santería, Umbanda, Trinidad Orisha, Haitian Vodou, and Candomblé. Yoruba religious beliefs are part of Itan, the total complex of songs, histories, stories, and other cultural concepts which make up the Yoruba society This exceptional Yoruba votive statue (Nigeria) that was worshipped by women who could not have children. Old African carved and bound statues of this age do show pockets of erosion of the hardwood in places, a consequence of hot and humid conditions. This votive shows some evidence of such erosion, however it is very solid and sound and stable. A strong piece in most ways.
