Description
This is a truly outstanding original and substantial sized Oil on Canvas Painting depicting a Classical Italian Landscape scene with medieval buildings and figures crossing over a humped-back river bridge. Painted during the late 19th - very early 20th Century by a follower of the famous 17th Century Italian artist Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675). Dughet was trained by Poussin, who later became his brother-in-law and whose name he adopted. Following Claude and Poussin, Dughet became one of the best-known landscape painters of 17th-century Rome. His style was influenced by the work of Rosa. His early biographers emphasised his precocity and the speed of his execution. The figures in some of his works, including his Landscape with the Union of Dido and Aeneas are by other painters. Dughet was in demand for landscape frescoes as well as for his paintings in oil. His style changed little throughout his life, so his paintings are not easily datable. Indeed, to all intent & purpose, this magnificent oil has the feel and the look of a much earlier work that should be commanding a price in the tens of thousands! The huge exceptional original frame is also made entirely of solid carved giltwood & gesso construction, which shows the piece off fabulously. Of the 260 or so works of art that we currently have on sale, this is very possibly our finest quality painting.
