Description
We offer for consideration, this superb William Iv period fusee wall timepiece with 12” dial, by the distinguished provincial clockmaker Thomas Saunders of Dorchester, Dorset. Commensurate with age, the clock is in excellent condition and good working order, having been professionally restored and serviced. Born in Crediton, Devon, 1805, Thomas Saunders was listed as a clock and watchmaker and master silversmith, being well-known in England’s south-west for producing very high-quality clocks and watches. As such, he was regularly commissioned to build timepieces for schools and prominent town centre public buildings of the day, by many regional town councils and committees. Today, this fabulous legacy means that his existing timepieces are much sought after on the open market! At some stage in the early 1850’s, Thomas was joined by his son in business (Thomas Christopher William Saunders, born 1832), after serving his apprentice with his father. Thomas (Jr) going on to run the business on his father’s retirement. Thomas senior passed away at the relatively young age of 66 in 1871. The clocks slim solid Oak turned roundhead face, sits over its boxed Oak cabinet with lovely, aged patination. There is a hinged inspection door located to the side of the box and an operable lockable door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial with Roman numerals and Saunders details, finished with its pair of original blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is protected by its original thick glaze, mounted in a solid brass bezel. The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee cable driven movement, set between its rectangular plates and turned pillars and comes with its original 76mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a winding key. This really is a superb example of a late Regency period English fusee timepiece by a master craftsman.
