These are three early 19th Century portraits on canvass, with the two men's canvasses then backed on board. Polydore Lippens was born in Belgium in 1810 and died in 1889. He was a versatile inventor of steam engines, the vibrating bell and had his own photographic studio. Coming from a large family, he is painted alongside his brother Desire and sister Adelaide.
